Each counting system have different use cases.

Do not worry, we will explain everything clearly so that you don’t get lost!

To form numbers larger than 10, we combine the digit with one of the numbers above.

  • 11 10 + 1 : 십일
  • 13 10 + 3 : 십삼
  • 16 10 + 6 : 십육
  • 18 10 + 8 : 십팔

Now form higher numbers, we combine the digit with the word for 10, this way:

  • 20 2 x 10: 이십
  • 40 4 x 10: 사십
  • 60 6 x 10: 육십
  • 90 9 x 10: 구십

With this, we can add a digit to form:

  • 22 2 x 10 + 2: 이십이
  • 35 3 x 10 + 5: 삼십오
  • 71 7 x 10 + 1: 칠십일
  • 94 9 x 10 + 4: 구십사

100, 1.000, 10.000

We can keep using the pattern we saw above for 100, 1000, 10.000 etc...:

  • 200 2 x 100 : 이백
  • 400 4 x 100 : 사백
  • 6,000 6 x 1.000 : 육천
  • 9,000 9 x 1.000 : 구천
  • 30,000 3 x 10.000 : 삼만
  • 80,000 8 x 10.000 : 팔만

Although it becomes a bit harder, the pattern stays the same:

Of course, you will need a bit of practice before mastering these numbers naturally.

Keep training yourself with our practice questions!

Hundred million and more

You might think that we are starting to go really high, is it really necessary?

Well, you are kind of right. Such high numbers are rarely used in everyday life.

Usually, the only case where you will encounter them is when talking about housing price.

The word for a hundred million is 억, and you can combine it with another digit just like before:

  • 1,000,000,000 십억
  • 3,050,000,000 삼십오억
